[ Though Tallie tried very, very, very hard to bury her feelings, they continuously resurfaced like persistent flowers in spring. In every quiet moment they shared, every step of this journey they've set on together to find their places in this big wide world that heralds them as heroes, she found more reasons to want to stick with him for longer. Just one more day. That's all she wants. ... or is it?

Admitting that Calem's important to her, that he's a dear friend that she'd hate to lose, was hard enough - but love? That scares her. And while Calem hasn't exactly told her his whole story, she wouldn't be surprised if he felt the same way. After all, they're similar in more ways than meets the eye.

She'd never forgive herself if she lost him because of this. But better to act now when they're a few hours from the next city. It'll be (theoretically) easier to part ways there, if that's what it comes to.

So she turns to him, and kisses his cheek. No warning, and minimal hesitation. ]

[Traveling with Tallie has been an eye opening experience, all be told. A lot of this has been a journey to satisfy his own curiosity at traveling the world around, but Calem knows more than anyone that it can't last. He enjoys the moments while he can, but he knows they'll have to part at some point. And yet...it doesn't make the moments he has with her any less enjoyable; Tallie may be blunt and she may be a little brusque, but it's what Calem likes about her. She's an interesting contrast to the air he tries to produce, and it is something he's grown to appreciate.

...It's something he's grown to consider very important to him, but Calem? Acknowledging his own feelings? Absolutely not going to happen. After everything that happened with Serena, he refused to do such a thing again, and no matter how much he adores Tallie, he can't do this to her. He can't do this to himself; her life is fleeting and she deserves to have a life unbound to his eternal, immortal one, but...

They're getting closer to the city, and their still traveling when Calem feels the kiss on his cheek, and he stops cold when he feels it. Gorebyss has gone off to beat up some Pokemon and thankfully can't see the shade of pink that Calem's face has taken, and he feels himself flush and realizes he can't evade this anymore. He...doesn't hate it.

But--]

Tallie? [It comes out surprised, delicate--some of that boyishness creeping into his tone from an era he long thought he had outgrown.] What is...you...I...

...I didn't expect this. [He wants to kiss her back. The thought enters unbidden in his head, and he shouldn't, he--he touches his cheek, carefully, surprised, but...] You...like me...?

[ Surprise isn't a bad thing. Heck, Tallie's the one harboring a crush, but she'd be caught off-guard too if Calem kissed her so suddenly. So while she's not in the clear quite yet - she hasn't actually said her feelings aloud, and therefore he hasn't fully responded - she allows the hope his response brings to warm her heart.

Her hands clench, an attempt to keep them from shaking. The hope hardly assuages the anxiety, but- ]

... More than that.

[ Calem knows more than anyone else how hard these three little words are for Tallie to say. But that's all the more reason to say them. She deserves this opportunity to express just how much Calem means to her... and, in turn, he deserves to hear her at her most sincere and vulnerable. To know how serious she is, here in this moment. ]
