[...But it's clear his attention is entirely occupied, and it isn't with McCoy's report. He smiles faintly, eyes still on the little girl, his big hand still splayed gently across her tiny body.

It seems somebody is a little besotted.]

[It's a good thing Jim's looking at the baby, because it means he'll likely miss the brief, fond smile that crosses McCoy's face.]

D'you know if there are population records on the planet? Tricorder's got her at about five and a half months. We might be able to get a name, figure out next of kin.

[...Oh, Bones is talking. Don't mind your Captain, Bones, he's just... preoccupied with the little fingers closing around his big one.]

[There's a small noise from the baby on the exam table. It's barely a complaint, certainly not a cry or anything, but you wouldn't know it from the way Jim reacts at once.]

Hey, hey, no, it's okay...

[He scoops the little girl up, sort of awkwardly cradling her against his chest; he means well and he's not actually harming her but it's clear he's never actually held a baby before.]

[He comes around to gently adjust Jim's arms so he's holding the baby more comfortably.]

Hold her like that.

Oh. Okay.

[He grins at McCoy, downright sheepish, just for a moment. And then his attention is right back on the little girl in his arms.]

I've never held anybody so... small before.

Kind of a miracle, isn't it?

[His jaw sets.]

Her parents should've gotten to see her grow up.

You're not gonna hear me arguing. But the best thing we can do for her in the meantime is keep her safe and get her to her next of kin.

Once we've done that, we can find the bastards who did this.

[Because... he was totally going to do that. Right. He puts in a call to Spock up on the bridge and sets that whole thing in motion.

And then it's right back to the baby in his arms.]

What do you think would happen if we couldn't find her next of kin?

She'd be a ward of the Federation - they'd keep her Earthside in San Francisco until someone adopted her.

It's not like a starship's really any place for a baby.

It's really not, Jim. Would you want to expose her to the sort of shit we face regularly?

[But her little hand is wrapped around his index finger and he's clearly having a moment.]

But I'd hate for her to think she was abandoned, too.

She won't feel abandoned. Starfleet takes great care of its foster kids, and when she gets adopted, she'll be put with someone who really loves her.

Yeah, no, I meant by...

Jim, she won't -

- feel abandoned by you. You could probably work something out with Starfleet so you could see her.

[There's a significant silence, which--Jim Kirk? Not talking? Uh-oh. And then he nods, almost resigned.]

Yeah. I guess that'd be for the best.

Yeah, it would be.

[He puts his hand on Jim's shoulder.]

She'll be taken care of, Jim.

[captaincocksure]

Yeah.

[He flashes a smile he doesn't quite feel.]

Yeah, of course she will.

What do we do with her in the meantime?

Take care of her as best we can, and let the Federation know we have her. Of course, hopefully Spock'll be able to find her family, and it'll all be a moot point.

[captaincocksure]

Yeah. Hopefully.

[...Hush, that is not reluctance on your captain's part.]

So does she have to stay-- mmmfffmm.

[Yeah, so, he was trying to talk but a curious tiny hand reached up and grabbed his lower lip. He gently loosens the little girl's grip, addressing her for a moment with a fond little smile.]

Sorry, sweetheart, I need that lip for a minute, I'm still talking.

[And then back to McCoy:]

I was saying, I guess she needs to sleep in here? It's... probably for the best, right?

[...okay, that melted McCoy's icy cage of a heart. Just a little.]

Yeah. It's the safest place. I suppose crew quarters near the interior of the ship would be okay, too, but none of them are really kitted out for a baby.

[captaincocksure]

[The tiny hand goes up again, and Jim winces, carefully prying it from his nose this time.

As casually as he can manage:]

Yeah. I mean, my quarters. They're pretty central.

...But probably not really a great set-up for sleeping arrangements.
