"Yeah, of course." He nods to the inter-ship communication system. "I'm just a call away."

"And we'll stop by in the morning--actually," Jim says, sitting up. "Is it all right if she stays with you in medbay again tomorrow? I can't really carry her around my entire shift, I guess."

[aviophobia]

McCoy's lips quirk up into a brief smile. "Yeah, not really. Of course you can leave her in medbay. I'd be happy to keep an eye on her."

[captaincocksure]

"Thanks," he says, clearly relieved. There's suddenly so much to juggle, so many things to worry about and schedule. He had no idea.

"I'll bring her by after we've had breakfast. Or do you want to join us?"

[aviophobia]

"When's breakfast?" It's a yes already, of course, but he wants to know when to set his alarm so he can get ready in time. He knows it's stupid to get so attached to this little girl, when she'll probably end up back on Earth with a family that loves her, but he can't help himself.

[captaincocksure]

"Seven. I have a departmental meeting at eight-thirty. That'll give us enough time to eat and get her settled in medbay before I have to take off."

He knows it's stupid, too, getting attached, knowing he can't keep the girl. But he's as powerless as his CMO to resist.

"We'll come get you on our way."

[aviophobia]

"Perfect." He checks the time, takes another sip of his drink. "I'll get something set up for her, and I'll let the crew know we'll have an extra-special guest."

[captaincocksure]

"I'm sure she'll love that."

Jim lets his eyes fall closed for a tired moment, blinking heavily when he opens them again. "And I'll work easier knowing she's looked after."

[aviophobia]

"Jim, you're practically asleep on your feet," Leonard says with a trace of uncharacteristic gentleness. "You'll be a wreck in the morning. Get to bed."

"Okay, okay," Jim relents, sketching out a mock salute, two fingers to his temple. He drains the rest of his glass and he gets to his feet.

"See you in the morning?"

"Wild horses couldn't keep me away." He finishes his own drink and sets down the glass, getting to his feet, too. His eyes go inevitably to the little girl curled up in her custom-built Starfleet crib, and he steps to it, resting his hands on the side.

"You need anything, you let me know."

Jim drifts over too, and for once tonight, he's watching his friend and not the baby. He wonders if the doctor feels the same sort of attachment to and responsibility for this particular little girl that he does already. He wonders what thoughts and feelings this brings up about his own little girl back home.

And he can't deny there's a small but very vocal part of him wondering if there's some way to make this work. It surprises him how much he wants it, but even more, how much he wants McCoy to be part of it.

He smiles, nodding. "I'll call if anything comes up. I promise."

[aviophobia]

"All right. See you in the morning." He claps a hand on Jim's shoulder, then heads to the door. It whooshes open soundlessly, and he steps into the hallway. He pauses, turning like he's going to say something, then shrugs it off and continues out.

Jim waits there a moment, in case McCoy comes back. When he doesn't, Jim checks on the baby once more.

Then he goes to brush his teeth. And check on her again.

And he changes. And checks on her one last time, pulling her blanket up over her shoulders as she sleeps.

And then he heads to bed, finally getting to sleep himself.
