Kirk to McCoy.

[He's calling on the communicator, from the planet below.]

Bones, are you there? I'm beaming up and bringing a patient directly to Medical.

[aviophobia]

I'm here. What's the patient?

We just transported up; we're on our way to you now.

...How are you with pediatrics?

[aviophobia]

[SUSPICIOUS.]

Pretty good. How old?

[captaincocksure]

[The medbay doors hiss open, and Jim strides through them, snapping his communicator closed with one hand. And with his other arm--and with rather a lot of care, even if his technique isn't quite right--he's cradling an infant against his body, swaddled in a blanket.]

...Not very old.

[aviophobia]

Oh, Jesus.

[And he's moving, fast, taking the child away from Jim and cradling it in a much better, much more natural way, pushing back the blanket to look at its face, and for a moment, his own face softens - before he looks back at Jim.]

Some kind of raid on the outpost down there. Sixty or so people. She's the only survivor we found.

[He's watching the child as he talks to Bones, apparently somehow even more worried for her now that he's not holding her.]

I don't even know which family she belonged to.

Jesus, she's tiny.

[He hurries over to a biobed and nods to Jim.]

Pull the sides up some more before I set her down.

[captaincocksure]

[Jim hurries to do this at once, making sure the sides are raised and secure. He makes no move to step back once he's done, remaining at the side of the bed opposite McCoy, only glancing up once in a while as he talks. He's still rather preoccupied watching the baby in the doctor's arms.]

Everyone else was outside. Looked like they'd been rounded up.

I found her in a cabinet, in the mess area. I think someone hid her in there.

How the hell did you find her?

[captaincocksure]

She... she started crying. I had to tear the room apart to find her.

...God, Bones, can you imagine if she'd started crying when whoever rounded everyone else up was still there?

[aviophobia]

She didn't, though. No need to focus on might-have-beens.

[He clicks on his tricorder and begins to scan her.]

What matters is that you found her and brought her to get help.

Yeah. I guess that's true.

[And he leans in a little closer, reaching a hand down to rest lightly on the little girl's chest as McCoy scans her.]

Is she okay?

[aviophobia]

Yeah. Whoever stuck her in there chose the best damn place they could have; she's pretty much fine. A few abrasions but I can fix those up fast.

[captaincocksure]

Good, good.

[...But it's clear his attention is entirely occupied, and it isn't with McCoy's report. He smiles faintly, eyes still on the little girl, his big hand still splayed gently across her tiny body.

It seems somebody is a little besotted.]

[aviophobia]

[It's a good thing Jim's looking at the baby, because it means he'll likely miss the brief, fond smile that crosses McCoy's face.]

D'you know if there are population records on the planet? Tricorder's got her at about five and a half months. We might be able to get a name, figure out next of kin.

[captaincocksure]

[...Oh, Bones is talking. Don't mind your Captain, Bones, he's just... preoccupied with the little fingers closing around his big one.]

What?

Oh. Yeah. I'll get Spock on that.

[In a minute.]

[aviophobia]

Should I leave you two alone?

[captaincocksure]

What? No, why would you need to--

[There's a small noise from the baby on the exam table. It's barely a complaint, certainly not a cry or anything, but you wouldn't know it from the way Jim reacts at once.]

Hey, hey, no, it's okay...

[He scoops the little girl up, sort of awkwardly cradling her against his chest; he means well and he's not actually harming her but it's clear he's never actually held a baby before.]

[aviophobia]

Here.

[He comes around to gently adjust Jim's arms so he's holding the baby more comfortably.]

Hold her like that.

[captaincocksure]

Oh. Okay.

[He grins at McCoy, downright sheepish, just for a moment. And then his attention is right back on the little girl in his arms.]

I've never held anybody so... small before.

[aviophobia]

Kind of a miracle, isn't it?

[captaincocksure]

Yeah. Yeah, she is.

[His jaw sets.]

Her parents should've gotten to see her grow up.

[aviophobia]

You're not gonna hear me arguing. But the best thing we can do for her in the meantime is keep her safe and get her to her next of kin.

Once we've done that, we can find the bastards who did this.

[captaincocksure]

...Find her next of kin. Right.

[Because... he was totally going to do that. Right. He puts in a call to Spock up on the bridge and sets that whole thing in motion.

And then it's right back to the baby in his arms.]
