_{[No one said being a super-hero dad was going to be easy. Jaime is already awake, jerked out of a mostly sound slumber by the newborn's cries. He stumbles out of bed, rubbing away sleep.]}

Yeah, yeah. I got it. I'll go check on her.

_{[He moves towards the door into the next room where the baby is making the usual cries for this time of night--he's gotten used to it.]}

[Steph yawns, but manages to pry herself out of her sleeping position.]

Wait. I'll come with? [Because she feels kind of guilty making him deal with it. And she's already awake. So she yawns wide and slides out of bed to follow him.]

Yeah, sure. If you'd like.

_{[He smiles blearily at Stephanie and heads into the next room, leaving the door open behind him as he bends over the crib to pick up his daughter.]}

Shh, mija. It's okay.

[She's still sleepy, but she puts a hand on his back and leans in to their baby girl, smiling softly.]

Hey, sweetie. We're here. What do you need? [Reaching out a hand for her and trying to see if she can tell what's wrong.]

_{[Jaime gently rocks the child in his arms, grateful that he has an alien bug-robot in his spine to administer a little all-natural stimulant when he needs. Like when his baby needs some attention at two in the freakin' morning.]}

Prob'ly colic or something. Not used to night and day cycles yet, maybe?

_{[He looks over at Steph with a small, exasperated grin.]}

. . .I love her but I kind of miss regular sleep. Not that I had much before. You know, saving the world and all.

Maybe. [She looks visibly relieved at the thought that it might just be her not used to night time = sleep time.

He gets a tired laugh though.] I don't even remember what 'regular sleep' feels like. I thought that was just a pre-teen phase or something. [And she hums a little, trying to get their girl to calm.]

Eight hours of sleep, a mythical thing from the days of yore. At least in school I could let Khaji take notes and sleep in class.

_{[Not that he actually did that. Most of the time.]}

Can't do that in dental school, though. Or with a baby.

I think eight hours of sleep is a lie parents tell their children. [She grins at him.] I wish I'd had that. Or had it now. I'm sure I'd find a way for it to be useful.

[She runs a hand over their girl's face.] Hey, Sofia. Sshh. It's okay. Mommy and daddy are here.

We'll just have to make do with what we have.

_{[He rocks Sofia a bit longer, sighing in relief as she slowly begins to quiet down.]}

. . .I'm still not used to being a dad. The whole idea of it.

That's my (admittedly cumbersome) middle name, you know.

[She smiles at him and leans up to give him a kiss.] Hey, for what it's worth? You're good at it.
